Agha Kahn Development Network
The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) brings together a number of agencies, institutions and programmes that work primarily in the poorest parts of Asia and Africa. While each agency pursues its own mandate, they are guided by a common framework that ensures that their different pursuits interact and reinforce one another.
The AKDN has a strong focus on education. In addition to establishing schools and universities, the AKDN provides support to educational institutions in developing countries and conducts research into teaching and learning. Moreover, it also offers vocational training.
Founded by the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, His Highness the Aga Khan, the AKDN is committed to the principles of global pluralism and non-confrontational approaches to development. Its secular engagement, with a grounding in the cultural aspects of the Ismaili faith, is a powerful counter to populism, isolationism and fundamentalism. Its emphasis on the economic empowerment of individuals and communities, through microfinance, agribusiness, financial services, industrial promotion and tourism promotion, is an example of this approach. The AKDN also supports cultural development through the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and the Historic Cities Programme.
